Joe Wittemore

Joe Wittemore had polio at age five. For 62 years, the only braces he would even consider wearing came from Warm Springs. However, a little over five years ago, he tried on a brace made by Marc Kaufman at Atlanta Prosthetics and Orthotics and after two minutes of wearing their brace Joe said, “Marc, you’ve got a better mouse trap!”.

“The back problems I developed around age 35 were related to strain I placed on the disc in my lower back because of my weak leg caused by the polio. So, the slightest fluctuation or ‘give’ in my leg brace would cause back pain. When the brace began to fluctuate at any point, I would have back pain within a couple of days. I used to buy a new brace about every 18 months. This brace is so strong that it does not ‘give’. The AP&O brace is truly different and much better than anything I’ve ever worn. After five and a half years this brace is still solid as a rock.

“Of course, no brace can be built perfectly. The key is having someone that really knows how to ‘tweak it’ so the brace fits and wears well. Marc has a unique talent to listen and understand the small things that need changing on a new brace and the skill to make the needed adjustments.

“My back feels better, my brace has lasted 3 ½ times longer and I have a partnership with Marc and AP&O which I can truly believe in.”
