PROPRIO FOOT

What is it and how does it work?

The PROPRIO FOOT is an artificially intelligent and motor-powered prosthesis that replaces lost muscle function and provides information – that the body’s central nervous system processes when the leg is intact – about changes occurring inside and outside the limb. It does this by:

•    Sensing. The loss of proprioception – knowing where their foot is in space – is a huge safety issue for amputees. Sophisticated sensors built into the PROPRIO FOOT mimic the body’s own sensors, providing a form of artificial proprioception: Hence the name PROPRIO FOOT. It uses real-time sensor technology to sample ankle motion over a thousand times per second.

•    Thinking.  Patented artificial intelligence (AI) processes information from the sensors and activates the most appropriate response for the next step. It identifies specific motions, such as heel strike, to enable a timely response to variations in terrain and activity. As fast as it is measured, the data is fed into a microprocessor.

•    Acting.  Foot motion is continuously analyzed. The AI transmits a constant stream of signals which instructs a high-precision actuator to deliver the appropriate motion. For each stride, gait pattern recognition algorithms in the foot detect and identify when a user is walking on flat or sloped surfaces and up or down stairs, as well as when stationary or sitting down
